Questions about birth charts
A birth chart, or natal chart, is a map of the sky at the moment you were born, seen from the place of your birth. It shows the sign of the Sun, the Moon and each planet, and in astrology each placement says something about a part of your character.
The sky turns once a day, so the sign on the eastern horizon changes about every two hours. This sign is the rising sign, or ascendant, and it sets the houses. Without a birth time we set the chart for noon and leave out the rising sign and the houses. The Moon also moves about 13 degrees a day, so it can change sign on your birthday.
Whole sign houses, the oldest house system. The sign of your ascendant is the first house, the next sign is the second house, and so on around the chart. The ascendant (AC) and the midheaven (MC) are marked on the wheel.
An aspect is an angle between two planets as seen from the Earth. We show the five major aspects: conjunction (0°), sextile (60°), square (90°), trine (120°) and opposition (180°). The orb is how far the real angle is from the exact one. On the wheel, blue lines are trines and sextiles, and red lines are squares and oppositions.
The tropical zodiac, which Western astrology uses. Its first sign, Aries, starts at the March equinox. The signs are not the same as the constellations with the same names, which have shifted apart from them over the centuries.
We calculate the apparent position of each body for the exact minute and place. The positions agree with the Swiss Ephemeris, the standard for astrology software, to within 0.02 degrees. Dates from 1900 to 2100 are supported.
