A personalised star map for Christmas

A star map is a Christmas present with one story behind it. It shows the stars above a place you choose, at the date and time you choose, with a title and a message in your own words.

It suits a partner, a parent or a close friend, because the night on the print belongs to the two of you. Below you can find which night to choose, what to write, and how to time your order before Christmas.

Which night to put on a Christmas star map

The strongest choice is rarely Christmas itself. Pick the night this year that you want to keep: the night you met, the night you moved in, the night of a proposal, or the night a child was born.

If you want a Christmas night, use Christmas Eve at the place you spent it together, at the time you remember best: Midnight Mass, the walk home, or the moment the presents came out. Boxing Day works too (St Stephen's Day in Ireland). For a first Christmas together, use that year and that home.

In Australia and New Zealand, Christmas falls in summer and the nights are short. It is not fully dark until late in the evening, so a late hour gives a sky you could really see: the walk home after a long dinner, or midnight on the beach.

Enter the local time at the place. We convert it with the time zone of that place, so you do not need to work out the time difference yourself.

Order early in December

We print each map after you order it and dispatch it to you. Your order page shows the status and tracking when it is available. December is a busy month for printers and couriers, so give yourself a margin of a few weeks.

If Christmas is close, you can still give the moment on the day. Show the preview from the editor on your phone, or print it and put it in a card, and tell them the print is on its way.

Framed or print only

A framed print is ready to give and ready to hang. Choose a black, white or natural frame to match the room it will go in. A print only costs less and suits a person who likes to choose their own frame.

All four sizes are inch sizes, from 12 × 16 in (about 30 × 40 cm) to 18 × 24 in (about 46 × 61 cm). They are not A sizes, so if you frame it yourself later, choose a frame made for that exact size.

A theme for the season

Midnight and Eclipse put light stars on a dark sky, which looks like a real winter night in the UK and Ireland. Starlight is a light paper with dark ink, and it suits bright rooms, minimal walls and a sunny Australian or New Zealand home. Aurora is a deep green that sits well with wood and plants.

Turn on the Moon if the night had one. We calculate its position and phase for your place and time, and it only shows when it was above the horizon.
