Mother's Day gifts for a new mum

Updated

A first Mother's Day often comes weeks or months after a birth. A new mum is short on sleep, short on time and full of feelings about it. A good gift gives her rest, or keeps the moment she became a mum.

In the UK and Ireland, Mother's Day is Mothering Sunday, the fourth Sunday of Lent, in March or early April. In Australia and New Zealand, it is the second Sunday of May. These ideas work from a partner, a parent or a friend. Each one says who it suits.

  1. A star map of the night her baby was born

A personalised star map from Star Crossed Skies shows the stars above the hospital or home where her baby was born, at the minute of birth, with the baby's name and a message. A partner usually knows the details already, so it can be a surprise.

  2. A block of time to sleep

Take the baby for a set morning or afternoon so she can sleep, uninterrupted. Write the time on a card and keep the promise. For many new mums, this is the gift they value most.

  3. Prepared meals

Cooked meals, delivered or stocked in the freezer, save her hours each week. Choose food that is easy to eat with one hand. Ask about diets if she is breastfeeding.

  4. A cleaner for a few weeks

Book a cleaner for a one-off deep clean or a few weeks of visits. A clean house removes a job from her list without asking anything of her.

  5. A birthstone necklace

A simple necklace with the birthstone of her baby's birth month. It is small enough to wear every day. Choose a short chain, because babies pull on long ones.

  6. A family photo session

Book a photographer for an hour at home or outside, with her in the photos. New mums take hundreds of photos of the baby and are in very few. Let her choose the date.

  7. A soft dressing gown or pyjamas

A soft, washable dressing gown or a pair of pyjamas for night feeds. Choose front-opening styles if she is breastfeeding. It is practical, and she will use it every night.

  8. A letter from her partner

Write about the day the baby was born and what you saw her do in the weeks since. Be specific. New mums rarely hear what they are doing well.

  9. A massage

Book a massage and arrange the childcare around it. Many therapists offer postnatal massage. Check with her about timing after the birth.

  10. A photo book of the first months

Collect the photos from the baby's first months, with her in them, and print them as a book. It takes an evening to make and she may never find the time herself.

  11. A few hours out on her own

Plan a brunch with her friends, a haircut or a walk alone, and look after the baby while she goes. Many new mums have not been out alone since the birth.

  12. A water bottle and snack basket for night feeds

A large water bottle and a basket of easy snacks by the chair where she feeds the baby. It is a small, practical gift that she uses many times a day.

Rest first, keepsake second

In the first months, the most useful gifts give time back: sleep, meals, a clean house. A keepsake means more when it comes with real help.

A good pair is one practical gift and one keepsake, such as a block of sleep and a star map of the night the baby was born.

Ask what she wants before you plan a surprise. Some new mums want company, and some want to be left alone for an afternoon.

Plan ahead for the day

Mothering Sunday moves with Easter, so in the UK and Ireland it falls between 1 March and 4 April. In Australia and New Zealand, the day is in May. Printed and engraved gifts are made to order and then dispatched, so order a few weeks before the day. Book photographers and cleaners early, because the weekends before Mother's Day fill up.

For a star map, use the hospital's town or city and the minute of birth from the hospital notes or the midwife.

If she has older children too, make one star map per child in the same theme and size, so the prints hang together.

From a grandparent or a friend

A grandparent can give a keepsake of the birth, such as a star map, or take on the baby for an afternoon. A friend can bring a meal and stay for an hour.

Ask her partner what she needs most. The answer is usually sleep.
