Add the Moon of your night to a star map

A star map shows the sky over your place on your date, with the Moon in its phase when it was above the horizon. We've set this one to the next full Moon over Sydney, on 25 November 2026. Change it to your own night, and we'll print it on museum-grade paper.

The eight phases of the Moon

One cycle of phases, from new Moon to new Moon, takes about 29.5 days. The drawings show the Moon as it looks from the southern hemisphere.

  • new Moon

The Moon is between Earth and the Sun, and its lit side faces away from us, so we can't see it. It rises and sets with the Sun.

  • waxing crescent Moon

A thin curve of light shows on the left side and grows each evening. Look for it in the west after sunset.

  • first quarter Moon

Half of the face we see is lit, on the left. The Moon rises around noon and sets around midnight, so it's high in the evening sky.

  • waxing gibbous Moon

More than half is lit, and the lit part keeps growing. The Moon rises in the afternoon and is up for most of the night.

  • full Moon

The whole face is lit. The Moon is opposite the Sun, so it rises around sunset and sets around sunrise.

  • waning gibbous Moon

More than half is still lit, but the lit part shrinks each night. The Moon rises later each evening, after sunset.

  • last quarter Moon

Half of the face is lit again, now on the right. The Moon rises around midnight and is high in the morning sky.

  • waning crescent Moon

A thin curve of light shows on the right side, low in the east before sunrise. It shrinks each morning until the next new Moon.
